HOWDY STUDIO
210 Polk Street #3, Port Townsend. Entrance through the door to the right of Owl Sprit restaurant. Second floor, unit #3. There is an elevator and free parking on Polk Street. 

Howdy Studio is the shared work space of Julie Read and her artist husband Burl Norville! It's a colorful and funky space in the heart of downtown Port Townsend, with a big window facing the water. Students will enjoy the real working studio vibe, and no two work stations are the same! Because space is limited, classes are small and intimate (limited to 6 students). Howdy Studio shares three bathrooms in nearby hallway, and has a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, coffee, tea and snacks at all times! 

ACRYLIC PAINT COLORS

The following colors are required:

• Burnt Sienna

• Titanium White

• Ultramarine Blue

• Phthalo Blue (green shade)

• N5 Grey

• Naples Yellow

• Payne's Grey

• Cadmium Orange

• Cadmium Yellow Medium

• Permanent Green Light

Additional colors that I find really helpful:

• Alizaron Crimson

• Carbon Black

• Teal

• Titan Buff

I use Golden brand acrylic paints exclusively. They are the most expensive brand, and once you use them it is hard to use anything else. They are that much better! You can buy whatever brand you want but you will enjoy the high end paints so much more. Acrylic paints come in a variety of different “bodies”, this is referring to their viscosity. I use the Heavy Body acrylics, which are the most common. The tube may not actually say that the paint is Heavy Body on the front. It will tell you on the back. There are also “Fluid” Acrylics (which will be in a bottle), and “Open” Acrylics (which will also be in a tube, but it will say “OPEN” on the front). Do not purchase these types of paints for this class.

PALETTES

You can use anything you want as a palette, but I like to use a “wet” palette, which will extend the life of your paints. I use the Masterson’s Sta-Wet Handy Palette (comes with refillable sponge and papers). You may be surprised to find that the palette is pretty small (9” x 7”). There is nothing wrong in getting a larger one, but I actually suggest getting 2 small palettes rather than one large palette. It is more versatile if you are working on more than one painting at time. In fact, I have several of them in use at one time typically.

BRUSHES

You can use whatever brush you find, really, but when it comes down to it soft brushes are the best for Acrylic painting. For Oils, you might use a hog bristle brush which is coarse. For Watercolors, you might use an expensive Sable hair brush. I recommend cheap, soft, synthetic brushes for Acrylics, and not the ones with the really long handles if you are a beginner.

DickBlick.com is an art supply website and they carry the Princeton Snap! series brushes. These are great for Acrylics, they are affordable, and I definitely recommend them the most!

CANVASES

I will be providing you with canvases of different varieties and sizes. I recommend not purchasing any until you are familiar with the different surfaces and develop a preference.

OPTIONAL ADDITIONS

• There will be water jars, paper towels, and easels for you to use in class, but you can bring in your own if you want.

LOW ENROLLMENT CANCELATION REFUND POLICY
Julie Read reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet a minimum enrollment prior to the start date. In the event of class cancellation, students will be notified by phone and/or email. If a class is canceled by Julie Read, a full refund will be given.

WITHDRAWAL REFUND POLICY
Withdrawals from classes or workshops are permitted up to five business days prior to the start of the class. All refunds are subject to an administration fee of 20% of the class fee or $10 (whichever is greater). All withdrawals or requests for transfers MUST be made through Julie Read by contacting artbyjulieread@gmail.com.  Students canceling fewer than five business days before the start of class will not receive a refund (exemptions made for medical reasons accompanied by a doctor’s note.) Julie Read is not responsible for classes missed by the student. Missed classes cannot be transferred, made up, or carried to other sessions.

LATE REGISTRATION
Provided that there is still space in a class, registration is accepted after the first class has already taken place. There will be no discount given to participants who register late.
