Spend a weekend in Howdy Studio with Julie Read learning how to paint from old photographs! You will want to bring in a picture or two for this workshop that you feel inspired to turn into a  painting.

SCHEDULE

On Friday afternoon, from 2-4, students will gather at Howdy Studio for afternoon tea to meet each other, share our photo inspirations, get acquainted with the space, and learn about the process for the weekend. Julie will keep your photo inspirations for the night to digitize them and prepare them for printing and enlarging.

Saturday and Sunday we will work together to start your paintings. We will explore monochromatic painting techniques (for black and white/sepia inspirations), using grids (or not) and Julie will share countless tips, tricks and hacks that will benefit your painting practice no matter what you plan to do next!

ABOUT THIS CLASS

This class is not recommended for beginners. If you have any questions, email Julie to discuss!

Coffee, tea, soda waters and light snacks are available any time, and we will have a 1 hour lunch break from 12-1.

Howdy Studio is a shared work space for Julie Read and her husband Burl Norville. It is located in the Kuhn Building, downtown Port Townsend on Water street, overlooking the bay! It's a funky place with no two work stations the same. Classes are limited to 6 and you will plenty of one-on-one with Julie.

Location: 210 Polk St #3. Entrance is the door to the right or Owl Sprit Restaurant.

There is free parking on Polk Street in front of the entrance. Howdy Studio is on the second floor, in unit #3. There is an elevator if you need it!

There are shared bathrooms down the hall from the studio, and you will have access to fridge and microwave.

MATERIALS LIST

Acrylic Paints Required (Heavy Body - not fluid or open)

Titanium White

N5 Neutral Grey

Carbon Black

Burnt Sienna

Ultramarine Blue

Cadmium Red Medium

Cadmium Yellow Medium

Acrylic Paints Suggested

Cadmium Orange

Permanent Green Light

Naples Yellow

Paynes Grey

Dioxazine Purple

Quinacridone Magenta

I use exclusively Golden Heavy Body paints, because in my opinion they are the very best and once you try them you want only them. They are of course expensive, so purchase what you are comfortable with but trust me, there is a big difference.

Brushes Required

Bring whatever you have, but know that I have a strong preference toward Filberts and Round brushes. I also recommend synthetic soft brushes, all though a few coarse hair brushes are good to have. Here is what I like:

Princeton Snap! Brushes (short handle)

1" Wash

12 Filbert

4 Filbert

1/2" Stroke

2 Round

in addition to these sizes, I also like to have a couple of itty bitty Round brushes, size 0 or smaller (00). I am not the biggest fan of the Princeton Snap itty bitty brushes. I can’t tell you why specifically, I think it has to do with the discontinuation of a brand I loved and I have not yet been able to find a satisfactory replacement. But it’s my problem and when I have a recommendation I will promote it. Until then do what I am doing, buy some and try them.

Palette Required

I strongly recommend using a wet palette. I like the Masterson’s Sta-Wet palette. Often I utilize the “Handy” palette, and have one more in use at a time, but they are quite small and depending on the mess you are inclined to make you may prefer a larger size.

Canvases, paper towels, water tubs, drawing media and paper will be provided. Julie will have everything you forget or don't have, and she will share with you!

Please email Julie is you have any questions!
